5 Tips on Teaching Your Child to Be Responsible

Your child retains most of what you teach him as a child. The training you give him at an early age will serve as a foundation of how he views things as he grows. This is one of the reasons why you have to inculcate good values and behaviors while he is still young. This will help him become a person of character someday. One of the things that you can teach him is how to be responsible.

A person is responsible if he takes full accountability of his actions. If your child is responsible, he will be honest about his mistakes and will be careful with the decisions he is going to make. Here are some of the tips on how you can teach your child to be responsible.

1. Set a good example. Your child is very observant with what you do. If he sees that you are responsible with your things, chances are he will do the same. Show your child that you don’t allow your things to be scattered on the floor. If you do this, he will probably pick his stuff from his kids rugs and put them in designated places.

2. Ask for his help when you are cleaning. If you are in his room and you see his toys lying around, ask for his help. While organizing his room together, advise him that he should keep his toys and other things after using them and that it will make things easier for the both of you.

3. Assign him a task. Giving your child an assignment everyday will train him to be responsible. You can probably instruct him to feed your pet. He has to be cautious of the time and the amount of food to be served. You can also ask him to take charge of his room. Give him some rules. Tell him to arrange his toys before he goes to sleep. No item should be on his schoolroom carpet. He should clean up early so that he can sleep early. This will teach him to be self-directed too.

4. Recognize his efforts. You should let your child feel appreciated. If he has been doing his duties well, he deserves a pat on the back or even rewards. This will motivate him to do better in the future. If you notice that he is having a hard time cleaning up, especially the modern rugs, help him. If he can’t operate the vacuum yet, do it for him. You can teach him to do that once he is older.

5. Make sure he makes it a habit. You have to monitor his progress every day. Continue to verify if he is religiously doing his tasks. Your child should continue to do his obligations without being reminded. He has to continue feeding your pets, organize his room and make sure that his school bath rug is clean.

Start training your child to be responsible by giving him duties at home. Once he aced these simple duties, he will surely do well with other things. So don’t underestimate it. He may simply be picking items from his schoolroom carpet, but this is very significant in the person he will become in the future.
