Your
child understands the importance of studying but he is struggling
to focus. This is one of the issues most parents face. One can’t
expect a child to go to his room sit on the magic carpet ride and
study his lessons immediately after school. Of course, children
are aware of the importance of studying. It results to good grades
and better performance in class. But somehow, kids seemed preoccupied
and studying seems to be the last thing on their list.
There are various reasons why children have a hard time to study.
One is that they don’t have a place conducive for studying.
Either their room is cluttered or there it is uncomfortable. Another
is the presence of distractions. The room could be filled with toys
and there are pieces of the jigsaw puzzles all over the floor. One
may even think that they are part of the discount carpet . You can’t
expect a child to focus if he is in this kind of environment.
Here are some tips you may want to consider:
• Be around.
Monitor if your child is studying properly. Observe how he studies
and if it is effective. You will be able to identify his strengths
and weaknesses if you see him with school works more often. This
is why a spacious area is recommended so that you can sit on the
schoolroom carpet, read a nice book while watching him study.
• Recognize his efforts.
Anyone wants to be recognized for their
efforts. If a paid employee does, so does your child. You can recognize
his efforts by telling him he is doing a good job. Even a simple,
very good will do. You can also serve his favorite snack; show him
that you are happy with what he is doing.
• Keep all the distractions.
He would not be able to concentrate if there is a toy everywhere
he looks or if the television is on. Keep his room organized. Assign
him to tidy before he leaves for school so that when he comes home,
it will be ready for him. Double check his room as well. There should
be nothing on his bed that is not supposed to be there or on his
schoolroom carpet. This is to ensure that there is no destruction
when he gets back.
• Provide him with a comfortable study area
One of the major factors in encouraging your child to study is the
room. It has to be well illuminated. A spacious room is always preferred.
He has to have a comfy table and chair. He would not be able to
focus if he keeps on finding that comfortable spot.
• Use educational software.
Learning materials are no longer limited
to books, visual aids and toys, furniture such as schoolroom carpets
are also used. It is no surprise that people would come up with
something as brilliant as educational software. You can pick the
one that is appropriate for your child’s level and you can
teach him to use it.
If you want your child to focus while he
studies, help him. Encourage him by acknowledging his work. Provide
him with study materials and make sure that he is comfortable. Prevent
distractions by training him to organize his things and most importantly,
be visible by checking on him every now and then.
